U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) recently delivered a speech on the Senate floor to commemorate the 100th anniversary of WOWO Radio, a prominent station in Fort Wayne, Indiana. WOWO first broadcasted on March 31, 1925, at 500 watts and has since been an integral part of the local community.

In his address, Senator Young highlighted the station's longstanding presence and its evolution over time. "Over the past century, through good times and bad, Hoosiers in the northeast part of our state have turned on and tuned in to WOWO Radio," he stated. He acknowledged how the station has adapted to changes while maintaining its role as a trusted source of news and entertainment for listeners.

Senator Young emphasized WOWO's significant impact during pivotal moments in history. He recounted how it became a cultural hub during the Great Depression by promoting country music and provided critical updates during World War II for families with loved ones overseas. The senator remarked on how WOWO served as a vital source of information during major events like the Blizzard of 1978 and September 11 attacks.

Throughout its history, WOWO has fostered community engagement through initiatives such as the Penny Pitch fundraiser which began in the 1940s. This annual drive continues to support local charities like Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne, raising substantial funds each year.

Notable personalities from WOWO have become well-known figures within Northeast Indiana. Broadcasters such as Bob Chase, Charly Butcher, Pat Miller, and Kayla Blakeslee are recognized for their contributions to local media.

Senator Young concluded by acknowledging that despite changes over time, "WOWO will never be just call letters." He expressed confidence that WOWO will continue to play an important role in northeast Indiana for many years to come.
