Today, U.S. Senator Todd Young of Indiana issued a statement regarding President Donald Trump's signing of an executive order aimed at enhancing the shipbuilding industry in the United States. Young expressed support for the order, noting its alignment with his own legislative efforts.
"President Trump understands that we need to build more ships here in the United States. This executive order recognizes the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to reinvigorate the U.S. shipbuilding and maritime industries, sharing the same goals as the SHIPS for America Act," Young stated.
He highlighted concerns about America's lagging maritime capabilities. "America’s maritime industry and shipbuilding capacity have dangerously lagged behind over the years, allowing China to get ahead and pose a serious threat over the oceans," Young noted. He viewed the administration's actions as recognition of this threat and the necessity to pivot strategies for bolstering national security and economic growth.
Young also commented that the executive order shares similarities with the SHIPS for America Act. "I am encouraged that many of the provisions in the executive order mirror parts of the SHIPS for America Act," he stated.
Senator Young announced plans to reintroduce the SHIPS for America Act soon, with continued congressional support. The goal is to secure authorizations necessary for revitalizing the shipbuilding and maritime sectors in collaboration with the Trump administration.
Senator Young, alongside Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona, originally introduced the SHIPS for America Act in December 2024. Plans to reintroduce the bill are underway, aiming for legislative approval.
