NFIB Indiana State Director Natalie Robinson testified before the Indiana Senate Pensions and Labor Committee, advocating for SB 123. This proposed legislation aims to modify the state's unemployment compensation system.
Robinson expressed her support by stating, “I believe this legislation represents a necessary and forward-thinking adjustment to the Indiana unemployment compensation system. The bill’s adjustment from 26 weeks to 14 weeks of benefits emphasizes fiscal responsibility. This change ensures that while individuals are supported during unemployment, the fund itself remains sustainable and capable of supporting future claimants.”
According to NFIB's December jobs report, 35% of small business owners reported having job openings they could not fill last month. This statistic highlights the need for policies that stimulate workforce participation.
Robinson further elaborated on an innovative provision within the bill: “The innovative provision that rewards proactive engagement with DWD, granting additional benefits to individuals who enroll in job training programs will enable the state to help individuals enhance their skills. This approach will help individuals become more marketable for job opportunities and encourages them to return to the workforce faster while still offering critical support during transitional periods.”
