Go Bloomington, Mobility Options for a Better Commute, To Begin Promoting Transportation Alternatives To The Single Occupant Vehicle

WHAT: The City of Bloomington is committed to sustainable transportation alternatives such as walking, biking, public transit, carpooling, vanpooling, micro-mobility and telecommuting. The goal is to reduce the number of single-occupant vehicles (SOVs) operating in town, which will decrease carbon emissions, relieve traffic congestion, and improve parking availability. The City of Bloomington is launching its new program - Go Bloomington. This event is free, family-friendly, and open to the public.

WHO: Transportation Demand Manager of the City of Bloomington Economic and Sustainable Development Jeffrey Jackson with Deputy Mayor Don Griffin and Council President Susan Sandberg as guest speakers

WHEN: Tuesday, September 6 at 2 p.m.

WHERE: In front of Bloomington City Hall, 401 N Morton Street

BACKGROUND

The new Go Bloomington website at gobloomington.org includes a software matching program that connects people interested in carpooling or vanpooling. The website provides a layered map that allows users to access Bloomington Transit and Indiana University Campus routes with real-time bus locations. Map layers also show the shortest routes for walking, biking, or where e-bikes and e-scooters are located.

The initial focus of Go Bloomington is to register as many individuals as possible on the new website. Employers such as Catalent, Indiana University, and IU Health are encouraging their employees to register. The backdrop for the launch event will include a Bloomington Transit bus with one of Go Bloomington’s new advertisements on the exterior. Commute with Enterprise will have an example vanpool vehicle on display and Lime will be introducing their new e-bikes into service at the event.

The City completed its Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Plan in 2020 and hired its first Transportation Demand Manager in November of 2021.  TDM consists of programs, education, pricing, and other strategies to shift behavior using existing infrastructure and maximize traveler options. Learn more at https://bton.in/!!2dJ. The Bloomington TDM program was branded Go Bloomington in February of 2022.
