City installs 'Walk Your Bike' signs, graphics in Arts District

5

City of Carmel issued the following announcement on Oct. 6.

The City of Carmel has installed new sidewalk markings on Main Street to remind bicyclists that they must dismount and walk their bikes when on the sidewalk in the most congested areas of Main Street in the Arts & Design District. New graphics were painted on the sidewalk in an effort to make them more noticeable to bicyclists.

In July 2020, the Carmel City Council approved Ordinance D-2534-20 establishing a Bicycle Dismount Zone along Main Street sidewalks between 1st Avenue East and 4th Avenue West. This order was done to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

“The redevelopment of the Old Town area of Carmel into a thriving vibrant Arts & Design District is a welcome site for this once quiet area of our community. While we embrace the popularity of this area, the historically narrow sidewalks make it unsafe to mix bicycle traffic with people walking, pushing strollers or dining al fresco in the busy District,” said Mayor Jim Brainard.
