Ronald Jeremy McCallister, a 51-year-old resident of Evansville, has been sentenced to 200 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon. This will be followed by five years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that on August 23, 2023, officers from the Evansville Police Department responded to reports of gunshots at a residence. They discovered that McCallister had shot his ex-girlfriend in the left ankle after an argument escalated when she tried to offer him support following suicidal messages he sent her through Facebook Messenger.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim in the backyard with a gunshot wound. McCallister was later found hiding inside the house with a loaded 9mm handgun nearby. His criminal history includes felony convictions for domestic battery and armed robbery, making it illegal for him to possess firearms.
U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Myers emphasized the importance of prosecuting armed domestic abusers due to their potential danger: “The victim in this case will be protected from her abuser for many years because of the excellent work of EPD, the ATF, and our federal prosecutor."
Daryl S. McCormick from ATF's Columbus Field Division added: "ATF will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute domestic abusers who possess firearms."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with Evansville Police Department conducted the investigation. U.S. District Judge Richard L. Young delivered the sentence.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew B. Miller prosecuted the case.
