The United States Senate has unanimously approved a resolution declaring April 2025 as National Safe Digging Month. This bipartisan effort is led by U.S. Senators Todd Young, a Republican from Indiana, and Gary Peters, a Democrat from Michigan.

Senator Young, who chairs the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Maritime, Freight, and Ports, emphasized the importance of the resolution. He stated, "As Chairman...I’m proud to cosponsor this resolution designating April as National Safe Digging Month. With the weather getting warmer and excavation projects increasing, it is important to remember to call before you dig.”

Senator Peters highlighted the risks associated with excavation activities. He said, “When utility lines are accidentally damaged during excavation projects, it threatens the safety of our workers and the environment while disrupting vital services that communities depend on.” Peters also reaffirmed his collaboration with the Common Ground Alliance to promote safe digging practices.

Accidental damage to underground utility infrastructure, including pipelines, electrical lines, and telecommunications cables, is a recurrent issue during excavation projects. To mitigate these risks, the Common Ground Alliance established National Safe Digging Month. The initiative promotes awareness of safety measures, such as the "One Call" policy that urges individuals to dial "811" before starting excavation work, ensuring awareness of utility line locations.

CGA President and CEO Sarah K. Magruder Lyle praised Senator Young’s efforts, stating, “Senator Young’s National Safe Digging Month resolution reflects his commitment to smart, preventative solutions that protect both public safety and infrastructure."

The resolution also received support from U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, who are co-sponsors. The full text of the resolution is available for public viewing.
