U.S. Senator Todd Young, along with 29 Senate Republican colleagues, has called on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to rescind firearms regulations enacted under the Biden Administration. The senators' letter specifically targets the "Engaged in the Business" rule, the pistol brace rule, the "ghost gun" rule, and the "zero tolerance" policy. The group also urged ATF to align its policies with former President Donald Trump’s Executive Order aimed at protecting Second Amendment rights.
“On Friday, February 7, 2025, President Donald J. Trump took decisive action to reaffirm law-abiding Americans’ Second Amendment rights in issuing his Executive Order, Protecting Second Amendment Rights. We urge you to immediately align ATF’s rules and policies with the President’s strong support for the Second Amendment,” stated the senators.
The letter criticized policies from former President Joe Biden's tenure that allegedly infringed upon Second Amendment protections. It highlighted Trump's directive for Attorney General Pam Bondi to review these regulations and work towards their rescission. “We ask that you work with the Attorney General to quickly identify and rescind these policies,” added the senators.
Besides Senator Young, notable signatories include Senators John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota among others.
The letter was addressed to Marvin G. Richardson, Deputy Director of ATF. It included requests for destroying outdated firearm transaction records over 20 years old due to privacy concerns and taxpayer savings.
Moreover, it encouraged continued improvements in processing National Firearms Act applications. “While NFA wait times have improved significantly,” they stated a need for further efficiency similar to that of background checks.
The document concluded by emphasizing ongoing collaboration during this transition phase as part of implementing Trump's agenda on firearms regulation.
