U.S. Senator Todd Young from Indiana, alongside a bipartisan group of colleagues, has introduced the DOE Quantum Leadership Act of 2025. This legislation aims to expand the United States' investment in quantum information science and research through the Department of Energy (DOE).

The proposed act seeks to authorize federal funding for quantum research and development over the next five years. It also grants the DOE authority to broaden its current quantum R&D initiatives. According to Senator Young, "Quantum research and development is critical to our economic and national security. This legislation would ensure the Department of Energy has the resources and authority to accelerate advancements while also addressing the sector’s evolving technological and workforce challenges."

Quantum technology plays a vital role in everyday technologies such as mobile phones and GPS systems, as well as medical devices like MRI machines. The expansion of quantum R&D could lead to significant advancements in pharmaceutical development and communication technologies. With China's focus on quantum technology, this initiative is crucial for maintaining American leadership in global technology.

Senators Dick Durbin from Illinois, Steve Daines from Montana, Chuck Schumer from New York, Lisa Murkowski from Alaska, and Alex Padilla from California are co-sponsors of this legislation.
