U.S. Senators Todd Young and Mark Warner have introduced a resolution in the Senate to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. The battle, which took place from February 19 to March 26, 1945, is remembered for its significant impact during World War II.
Senator Young expressed his sentiments, stating, "For myself, every Marine, and many Americans, Iwo Jima is a symbol of duty and sacrifice." He added that he is "proud to lead this resolution that recognizes the heroic servicemembers who gave their lives at Iwo Jima, honors those who fought in the battle, and reaffirms our reconciled friendship with Japan."
Senator Warner also shared his personal connection to the battle through his late father, Marine Corporal Robert Warner. He remarked, "I’m proud to introduce this resolution to pay tribute to the service and the sacrifice of all the heroes who fought for our country at Iwo Jima." He further noted that the anniversary serves as an opportunity to reflect on courage and unity.
The resolution has garnered support from several other senators including Richard Blumenthal, Dan Sullivan, Chris Coons, John Boozman, Catherine Cortez Masto, Kevin Cramer, Ruben Gallego, Ted Cruz, Tim Kaine, Joni Ernst, Angus King, Rick Scott, Amy Klobuchar, Thom Tillis, Jacky Rosen, Jack Reed, Chris Van Hollen, and Elizabeth Warren.
