U.S. Senators Todd Young and Debbie Stabenow have reintroduced a bipartisan bill aimed at improving the health of American communities by leveraging public-private partnerships to address adverse economic and social conditions. The Social Determinants Accelerator Act is designed to empower states and localities to collaborate with nonprofits and private companies, developing innovative strategies to tackle negative social determinants in their areas.
Senator Young stated, "Public-private partnerships are effective at addressing the challenges facing our communities, like affordable housing or a lack of transportation options. Our bill would empower local and state governments to improve social and economic conditions by leveraging existing or building new public-private partnerships."
The proposed legislation includes provisions for grants that would allow state, local, and Tribal governments to invest in these partnerships targeting underserved populations. Additionally, it proposes the establishment of a federal interagency council to assist grantees in identifying federal authorities, opportunities, and strategies for addressing these issues.
This act was initially introduced by Senators Young and Stabenow in 2019 and was reintroduced in 2021.
