Career criminal sentenced for robberies in Indianapolis

Alonzo Wiatt Sansbury, a 56-year-old Indianapolis resident, has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. Sansbury pled guilty to charges of commercial robbery and attempted commercial robbery.

Court documents reveal that on May 17, 2024, Sansbury attempted to rob a Dollar Tree store near North Keystone Avenue in Indianapolis. He used intimidation and threatened force during the incident, which was captured on video surveillance. Hours later, he committed an armed robbery at Big Lots near North Allisonville Road using an object he implied was a gun. This crime also resulted in him obtaining an unspecified amount of cash and was recorded on video.

Sansbury's criminal history spans over two decades with convictions for burglary, theft, and robbery dating back to 1989. Notably, he had been released from parole for a prior robbery less than a year before committing these recent offenses.

Zachary A. Myers, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana stated: “For more than two decades, this criminal has repeatedly demonstrated his utter disregard for the law or the safety and security of others.” Myers emphasized that repeat violent offenders are key targets for federal prosecution due to their significant threat to community safety.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI alongside the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker delivered the sentence. U.S. Attorney Myers extended gratitude towards Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy C. Fugate who led the prosecution efforts.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime and enhancing neighborhood safety through collaborative law enforcement strategies initiated by the Department on May 26, 2021.
