U.S. Senator Todd Young, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, recently addressed the Senate floor to discuss the foreign policy legacy of the Biden Administration and proposed steps for reasserting global leadership.

Senator Young began by reflecting on global events over the past four years, stating, "If you conduct a quick survey of global events over the past four years, it’s impossible to argue that the world is more secure today than it was when the Biden Administration began." He highlighted several key incidents that he believes have contributed to this insecurity.

The senator pointed to the Taliban's retaking of Afghanistan in 2021 as a significant turning point. According to Young, "The Biden Administration’s botched withdrawal cost the lives of 13 brave, patriotic American service members," leaving behind American citizens and Afghans in dire situations. This event sent a message of perceived American weakness globally.

Young also criticized U.S. support for Ukraine following Russia's invasion in early 2022. While acknowledging some assistance provided by the United States, he argued that it has not been sufficient for Ukraine to achieve victory: "The Biden Administration has too often slow walked deliveries of weapons or they’ve imposed other restrictions on the Ukrainian forces."

Further criticism was directed at efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal. Young claimed these efforts led to disastrous outcomes: "On October 7, 2023, Hamas – the Iran-backed terror group controlling Gaza – carried out the worst attacks against the Jewish people since the Holocaust."

He expressed concern about China's growing influence and military capabilities in Asia-Pacific regions and criticized President Biden's handling of incidents such as China's surveillance balloon over North America.

In conclusion, Senator Young emphasized a need for renewed U.S. leadership on a global scale: "Leadership comes with a price, but it also comes with rewards." He looks forward to collaborating with President Trump and his incoming administration to reverse what he sees as failed policies and restore deterrence against authoritarian regimes worldwide.
