Seventeen organizations have collectively urged the Indiana State Senate leadership to halt the progress of HB1264, a bill that proposes verifying residency and citizenship through controversial data sources. The groups argue that the bill contains numerous flaws and should not proceed out of committee during this legislative session.
The organizations' letter highlights significant concerns with HB1264, stating: “Indiana’s civic health is on the decline, and last election we ranked 50th in voter turnout. This bill will most certainly entrap legal voters and endanger their right to vote, meaning even worse voter turnout. Using bad data to fix a virtually non-existent problem will only make things worse. Senate leadership needs to pause this effort,” according to Julia Vaughn, Executive Director of Common Cause Indiana.
The coalition suggests referring the bill to a summer study committee for further examination of its issues. The Senate Elections Committee is set to review HB1264 on February 19, 2024.
Common Cause describes itself as a nonpartisan grassroots organization committed to upholding American democracy's core values by fostering open and accountable governance while promoting equal rights and representation for all citizens.
