In advance of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution, cosponsored by U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.), commemorating this historic operation and expressing gratitude to the U.S. Armed Forces and Allied troops responsible for securing victory in Europe.
“On June 6, 1944, the Greatest Generation stormed the beaches of Normandy, changing the tide of World War II. Today, on the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we remember these brave Americans and honor their selfless service and relentless dedication to freedom,” said Senator Young.
In the early morning hours of June 1944, 31,000 members of the United States Armed Forces and 153,000 counterparts in the Allied Expeditionary Force launched Operation Overlord by storming ashore five landing areas on the beaches of Normandy, France. The first day of the operation, which became known as D-Day, saw approximately 10,000 Allied soldiers wounded or killed, including 6,000 Americans.
Operation Overlord led to Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany's control and an end to World War II.
