Carmel ranked No. 3 ‘Safest City to Raise a Family’ in America in new data-based survey from SafeWise

The City of Carmel is the No. 3 “Safest City to Raise a Family” in America, according to a new survey released today by SafeWise, an online resource that provides tools and information to help people make their life safer at home and in their community. The survey is based on FBI data from 2020. Cities were ranked according to the rate of reported violent crimes (including aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft).

Carmel has consistently ranked among the safest cities in America by SafeWise and other surveys that rely on the same federal data. See our list of city awards here.

“Our Police Department works diligently in partnership with the community to ensure that the city remains a safe and secure environment in which to live and work. Thanks to their professionalism and the proactive nature of their crime-prevention strategies, we have been able to sustain a safe city that helps us attract corporate employers and a residential population needed to fill their employment needs,” said Mayor Jim Brainard.

Carmel Police Department has been a nationally-accredited law enforcement agency since 1996 by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). In order to achieve that accreditation, an agency must meet a number of objectives related to internal policies and external work. Read more about the criteria here.

According to SafeWise, the most noteworthy takeaways about Carmel pulled from this year's report include:

  • Carmel’s property crime rate (5.87 per 1,000 residents) is the fourth lowest of all U.S. cities analyzed this year.
  • Carmel’s violent crime rate (0.49 per 1,000) is the second lowest of all cities analyzed.
  • Carmel has a rate of 0.15 registered sex offenders — the 10th lowest rate among all cities analyzed.
  • Only one other city in Indiana made the Top 50 list — Fishers, which ranked

    No. 5.
