The event, held at Tempe Town Lake near the campus of Arizona State University, featured a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run. It was a part of the Sun Devil Draft Legal Classic, with the races separated by division.

DIII teams competed in the morning followed by DII and DI programs later that afternoon.

Trine University junior Amira Faulkner of Trine University finished in second place individually with a time of 1:12:56. Trine junior Alexandria Smith placed sixth and senior Kyra Warren ninth.

Trine was the only newcomer to break into the national championship ranks. Arizona State won the DI title for the fifth straight year and Queens University of Charlotte won the DII title for the sixth straight year.

In DIII, Millikin University finished second and North Central College, which had won the last four national titles, was third.
