U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) has joined a bipartisan group of senators to introduce the Aviation Innovation and Global Competitiveness Act, which aims to streamline the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) type certification process for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft. The proposed legislation sets specific timelines and standards for the FAA’s certification process, with the goal of reducing delays and providing clearer guidance to industry applicants while maintaining air safety.
Senator Young stated, “Advanced Air Mobility platforms will revolutionize the American economy. The Aviation Innovation and Global Competitiveness Act is a crucial step to securing American drone dominance. Our bill will provide much needed clarity and certainty as we seek to establish American leadership in these critical technologies and lay the groundwork for the future of air transportation.”
Other senators involved in introducing the bill include Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), John Curtis (R-Utah), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), and Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.).
The legislation has received endorsements from several organizations such as the Aerospace Industries Association, Airports Council International – North America, Archer Aviation, Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International, Beta Technologies, Boeing, General Aviation Manufacturers Association, Joby Aviation, National Air Transportation Association, National Business Aviation Association, Professional Aviation Safety Specialists AFL-CIO, Vertical Aviation International, and Wisk Aero.
Senator Young represents Indiana in the Senate and serves on committees focused on finance, commerce, science and transportation, small business matters, and intelligence issues. He has previously sponsored laws like the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. Young’s background includes service as a U.S. Marine Corps officer and earning degrees from institutions such as the U.S. Naval Academy and others.
