The Winter Livestock Auction in Riverton, Wyoming reported steady to firm prices for slaughter cows and bulls on April 14, with increased demand and active buyer participation according to the latest USDA AMS Livestock, Poultry & Grain Market News report.

This update is important for producers and buyers who rely on market trends to make decisions about livestock sales and purchases. The auction saw total receipts of 1,079 head of cattle this week compared to 464 last week and 1,880 at the same time last year.

Feeder cattle made up nearly seventy percent of the total receipts, with steers representing seventy-seven percent of that group. Slaughter cattle accounted for eight percent of the total receipts while replacement cattle comprised twenty-two percent. Feeder steers weighing between six hundred twelve and six hundred thirty pounds averaged $484.16 per hundredweight. Heifers in a similar weight range averaged $409.73 per hundredweight.

Slaughter cows were mostly steady compared to last Tuesday’s sale during a feeder special event, while slaughter bulls remained firm but with some instances showing prices five dollars lower than previous highs. Feeder cows going back to feed were noted as firm with some instances seven to nine dollars higher than before. Several packages of feeder calves and yearlings were sold at higher prices but there were no true comparisons available due to changes in offerings from previous weeks.

Replacement stock included stock cows ranging from less than two years old up through older age categories as well as bred cows and cow-calf pairs. Cow-calf pairs with calves under one hundred fifty pounds brought an average price above four thousand three hundred dollars per unit.
