The United States Department of Agriculture released its National Weekly Cattle and Beef Summary on June 1 in Des Moines, Iowa, reporting on boxed beef cutout values, cattle prices, and production statistics for the week ending May 29.
According to the report, the national comprehensive boxed beef cutout value was $394.37 per hundredweight this week, compared to $392.82 the prior week and $360.32 during the same period last year. Primal rib values were reported at $552.22 this week versus $546.51 last week and $564.34 a year ago. Other primal cuts such as chuck and round also saw slight increases from the previous week.
The weighted average steer price across five areas was noted at $256.86 per hundredweight for live steers, down from $260.49 last week but up from $229.94 a year ago. Live heifer prices were similar at $256.70 this week compared to $260.36 previously and $228.63 last year.
Weekly estimated beef production totaled 402.5 million pounds with slaughter numbers at 448,000 head of cattle—down from both the previous week’s estimate of 532,000 head and last year’s actual figure of 488,000 head for the same period.
The USDA also reported by-product drop values (steer) at $14.65 per hundredweight this week compared to $14.72 last week and significantly higher than last year’s value of $11.18.
