Two people died and one person was hospitalized following a multi-vehicle crash on I-69 southbound near the 295 mile marker, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department on June 3. Officers responded at approximately 1:54 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision involving several vehicles.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found that three passenger cars and three semi trucks were involved in a rear-end chain reaction crash. A preliminary investigation indicates that southbound semi truck #1 rear-ended passenger car #1, which was stopped in traffic. The same semi then struck passenger car #2, forcing it off the roadway to the west. Semi truck #1 continued forward and rear-ended semi truck #2, causing that vehicle to strike passenger car #3 from behind. Passenger car #3 was subsequently pushed southbound and collided with semi truck #3.
The drivers of passenger car #1 and passenger car #2 were pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. The driver of semi truck #1 was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
Authorities said that due to the severity of the incident, southbound I-69 at the 296 mile marker would remain closed until at least 8:00 p.m., as officers continued their investigation into the cause of the crash.
Further details about those involved have not been released as officials continue their work at the scene.
