U.S. Senator Todd Young, Representative Erin Houchin, and more than 100 other members of Congress have appealed to President Biden regarding the People's Republic of China's (PRC) decision to halt most intercountry adoptions. The lawmakers are advocating for American families affected by this suspension.
In their letter, they requested President Biden to encourage the PRC to honor its commitments. "We request that you act in the best interest of these children and families by urging the PRC to fulfill and uphold the commitment the country has made," they wrote. They highlighted that around 300 children in China, some with health issues, are already matched with U.S. families.
"The American families that have been matched with their adoptive children are prepared to meet their long-term medical and emotional needs, and to give them the love and nurturing they need," the letter stated. It emphasized that many children are aware of their new homes which have been prepared since the adoption process began.
The lawmakers noted a State Department notice from October indicating that adoptions may proceed for families in certain countries. They urged President Biden to ensure this would also apply to American families.
