U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) released a statement today regarding the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration's announcement that Indiana-based Heartland BioWorks, led by the Applied Research Institute, will receive approximately $51 million under the CHIPS and Science Act.

"When I worked to enact the CHIPS and Science Act two years ago, I knew Indiana was well-positioned to seize on the law’s historic opportunities to lead our country on technology areas important to global competitiveness. That potential continues to become a reality for Hoosiers," said Senator Young. "Today Heartland BioWorks was one of only 12 Tech Hubs across the country to receive a funding award. From leveraging existing resources and expertise in Indiana on life sciences and manufacturing to constructing a new headquarters for workforce training to helping early-stage innovative companies bridge the 'valley of death,' Heartland BioWorks is going to solidify Indiana’s place on the global map as the preeminent location for biotech innovation and manufacturing."

Senator Young introduced the Tech Hub concept in the Endless Frontier Act of 2020, which eventually became law as part of the CHIPS and Science Act signed in 2022. In October 2023, Heartland BioWorks was selected as one of 31 Tech Hubs nationwide eligible for Phase 2 implementation funding, with only 12 receiving funds.

Heartland BioWorks aims to transform Central Indiana into a global leader in biotechnology and biomanufacturing by enhancing its capacity to produce and deploy life-saving medicines. By leveraging local research institutions, venture ecosystems, logistics infrastructure, and established pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing presence, this Tech Hub intends to catalyze regional biotech innovation. The consortium seeks to strengthen the nation’s biotechnology supply chain and facilitate rapid discovery, development, commercialization, and deployment of next-generation bioproducts in human, animal, and plant biosciences.
