The Spring into Art Block Party at Johnnie Mae Farm brought together art, community organizations, and local residents on April 25 in Fort Wayne’s east side. The event featured creative activities, a cookout, llamas, and opportunities for neighbors to connect in a repurposed firehouse setting.
Johnnie Mae Farm is a collaborative project between Purdue Extension and the City of Fort Wayne that has operated since 2018. Located in the Renaissance Pointe neighborhood—a designated food desert with low median household income and nearly half its residents under 18—the farm’s mission extends beyond providing fresh produce. Its programming focuses on community health by fostering healthy relationships and social connections as essential elements of well-being.
Art played a central role during the block party. Activities included painting, mural creation, seed planting, flower pot decorating, fruit and vegetable printmaking with the Fort Wayne Art Museum, bubble painting, yard games set up by the parks department, and interactive exhibits from the local library. Llamas were also present as special guests. Attendees participated in various hands-on projects such as coloring squares on a mural or writing conversation prompts on picnic tables covered with butcher paper.
The event drew over 100 guests from both within the neighborhood and out of town. Feedback indicated that direct mailers, free food offerings, and engaging activities attracted attendees. Organizers said events like this foster social connection—a factor increasingly recognized as important for public health—and introduce more people to Johnnie Mae Farm’s mission.
Purdue Extension receives funding through public donations to aid community efforts; it is affiliated with Purdue University as part of the national cooperative extension network; it deploys specialists across all Indiana counties; its professionals receive tenure milestone recognitions for their service; it aims to enhance communities through research-backed programs in agriculture, natural resources, health sciences, human sciences, community development, and youth education; and it strengthens social well-being by supporting vibrant communities, according to the official website.
Organizers hope that some attendees will return for future farm markets this summer as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen ties within the neighborhood.
