Indiana lawmakers are considering a new bill aimed at addressing legal reforms that could affect small businesses. House Bill 1417, which recently passed the House Judiciary Committee, is designed to address concerns about frivolous lawsuits and reform certain aspects of the state’s tort system.
Natalie Carroll, Indiana State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), testified in support of the bill before the committee. “Indiana’s small business owners have become increasingly concerned about the uptick in frivolous lawsuits and are pleased to see the General Assembly address this issue,” Carroll said. “House Bill 1417 identifies weaknesses in our system that unfairly target small businesses and property owners. We appreciate the Committee’s dedication to making Indiana’s judicial system fair and balanced and encourage lawmakers to pass HB 1417 this legislative session.”
The legislation includes two key changes: it would require public nuisance cases to involve illegal activity, and it proposes an increase in caps on qualified settlement offers up to $100,000.
After advancing from committee, HB 1417 will now go before the full House for a vote.
Carroll also recently wrote an editorial in The Hamilton County Reporter urging legislators to make legal reform a priority during this session.
