Travis Frazier, a 28-year-old resident of Rochester, Indiana, has been sentenced to 54 months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco after Frazier pleaded guilty to charges of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and possessing a firearm after having been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor announced the sentencing. According to case documents, Frazier discharged a loaded gun while holding his infant child, resulting in the child being struck by bullet fragments. At the time of the incident, Frazier had previous convictions for both felony and misdemeanor domestic battery offenses, making it illegal for him to possess firearms.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from the Rochester Police Department and the South Bend Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Lydia T. Lucius prosecuted the case.
The prosecution falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that coordinates law enforcement agencies and communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The Department of Justice launched an updated violent crime reduction strategy on May 26, 2021, focusing on building trust in communities, supporting organizations aimed at preventing violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
