The Purdue Institute for Plant Sciences announced on April 27 the completion of a new set of high-tech greenhouses at the Lilly Life Science Ranges. The project, finalized in fall 2025, is one of the last initiatives funded by Plant Sciences 2.0 under Purdue’s Next Moves strategic plan.
The development aims to strengthen research and teaching in plant sciences through advanced facilities and technology. The new greenhouses span over 18,000 square feet and feature innovations designed to support both research and education.
Among the key features is a conveyor belt system that allows researchers to transport plants into the Ag Alumni Seed Phenotyping Facility for analysis using high-throughput cameras and an X-ray root scanner. Temperature control is managed with natural ventilation, automatic shade coverings, and air conditioning systems that enable year-round cultivation. State-of-the-art LED lighting provides adjustable light intensity, while humidity can be controlled via a fog system. Two isolation greenhouses are included to safely study diseased plants or pests without risk of spreading pathogens or insects to other areas. A dedicated teaching greenhouse offers flexible space for faculty and students with adaptable benching options.
According to the official website, Virginia Ferris was recognized as the first female full professor in Purdue University Department of Agriculture, serving as an entomologist. The department also funds innovative projects through AgSEED grants which have shown high returns on investment according to its official website. Extension efforts from the department are aimed at enhancing social and cultural well-being by supporting vibrant communities, strong families, and profitable businesses according to its official website.
Facilities such as these new greenhouses complement existing resources like the Agricultural Administration Building on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus according to its official website. The agricultural and biological engineering graduate program at Purdue ranks first nationally according to U.S. News & World Report as cited on their official website. As a core academic unit within Purdue University according to its official website, these developments reflect ongoing commitments in research infrastructure.
The Institute marked this milestone with an open house event earlier this year for faculty, staff, and students.
