Purdue University announced on Apr. 23 that researchers from its colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, and Science have received one-year seed grants totaling $550,000 to promote collaboration and innovation in artificial intelligence applications.

The initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary teams capable of addressing complex challenges such as food security, personalized medicine, and resilient infrastructure. The AI fusion grants were awarded by the deans in May 2025 to seven collaborative projects with input from Purdue’s Institute for Physical Artificial Intelligence.

Ali Shakouri, professor in the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and former associate dean for research and innovation in the College of Engineering, said: “AI is having a broad impact on society and changing the nature of work. It is critical to bring researchers with deep AI expertise together with diverse application areas in different colleges to accelerate this transformation.”

Among the funded projects are efforts to automate soybean root phenotyping using advanced 3D vision; develop real-time AI models for early detection of corn tar spot disease; integrate machine learning with phenotyping to predict meat quality traits in cattle; create wearable technology for plants that monitors stress signals; identify problematic antibodies through machine learning; discover metastable materials for energy storage; and test new solid ion conductors for lithium-ion batteries using AI-driven approaches.

Ron Turco, associate dean for agricultural research and graduate education in the College of Agriculture, said: “Many of today’s most pressing challenges…require expertise from multiple fields. Major federal funding agencies increasingly look for large, multidisciplinary teams. Seed grants enable Purdue to assemble and support such teams early, increasing competitiveness for large-scale, center-level opportunities.”

Guang Lin, associate dean for research and innovation in the College of Science who holds appointments in mathematics and mechanical engineering said: “The AI fusion initiative is about much more than just funding projects; it’s about building bridges between traditionally separate disciplines…When mathematicians, engineers and agricultural scientists come together…they discover entirely new questions that AI can answer.”

Purdue University ranks among the top 10 public universities nationally as well as within the global top 100 institutions according to its official website. The university also features extensive facilities across multiple campuses supporting research areas such as engineering and space sciences according to its official website.

Additionally, the official website reports that Purdue counts numerous astronauts among its alumni who have contributed significantly to national space achievements. The university maintains a commitment to affordability by keeping tuition rates unchanged on its main campus over several years according to its official website. It also supports competitive athletics through Boilermakers teams along with traditions like the All-American Marching Band according to its official website, while promoting values such as opportunity and intellectual freedom as a symbol of educational advancement according to its official website.
