The North Dakota Department of Agriculture reported on April 18 that only one cattle auction took place in the state during the week ending April 18, with a total of 1,927 feeder cattle sold. The report from AMS Livestock, Poultry & Grain Market News said feeder cattle offerings are becoming more limited as the season progresses.

This update is important for livestock producers and market participants who rely on current pricing and supply data to make informed decisions. The report showed continued good demand for both steers and heifers following a recent spike in cash fat cattle prices to $250 per hundredweight. Producers remain hopeful that profitability will continue throughout the year, supporting current price levels in the feeder cattle market.

The summary indicated that all sales this week were feeder cattle, consisting of approximately 45% steers and 55% heifers. Of these, about 81% weighed over 600 pounds. Steer prices ranged from $350 to $600 per hundredweight depending on weight class and quality, while heifer prices ranged from $320 to $565 per hundredweight. The report also noted that some replacement heifers fetched higher values within their category.

According to Justin Lumpkin, Officer in Charge at ND Dept of Ag Market News, “The above USDA LPGMN price report is reflective of the majority of classes and grades of livestock offered for sale. There may be instances where some sales do not fit within reporting guidelines and therefore will not be included in the report.” Prices are reported on an FOB basis unless otherwise noted.
