Indianapolis Public Schools announced on Apr. 21 that two Arsenal Technical High School graduates from the Class of 2025, Luis Chavez and Miguel Sanchez, have transitioned from interns to apprentices at Eli Lilly and Company. The announcement highlights a partnership between IPS and the global company that connects classroom learning with real-world work experiences for students.
The collaboration aims to help students move directly into careers in high-demand industries after graduation. According to the district, these efforts are designed to build a strong local talent pipeline by aligning education with workforce needs.
Chavez explored robotics and computer science while at Arsenal Technical High School before finding his interest through Lilly’s internship program. “It turned out better than I expected,” Chavez said. “It exposed me to a career that still lets me work hands-on — something I love.” He credits IPS for teaching him accountability, teamwork, and problem-solving skills essential in his current role as an apprentice line mechanic.
Sanchez said his motivation has grown since becoming a father: “Now that I’m a father, that boosts my desire to win,” he said. “It’s not about what you’re capable of. It’s about what you’re willing to do.” Both Chavez and Sanchez noted the importance of mentorship during their time at Lilly.
Angela Henry, employment engagement manager for IPS, said: “Through our partnership with Eli Lilly and Company, we’re not just creating opportunities — we’re building a direct bridge between classroom learning and meaningful careers. When students can step into real-world environments, work alongside industry professionals, and see themselves succeeding in those spaces, it changes what they believe is possible. That’s the power of partnerships like this — they turn potential into pathways and help our students envision a future right here in Indianapolis.” Henry described how early exposure to STEM fields leads students toward advanced opportunities such as internships or apprenticeships within Indiana’s life sciences sector.
