The Indiana Attorney General’s Unclaimed Property Division has returned more than $56 million to rightful owners as of May 18, according to an announcement on May 20. This amount raises the possibility that the division could set a new record for unclaimed property returns in 2026.
The largest sum previously returned by the division was $88 million in 2025. The division is responsible for returning unclaimed assets such as wages, commissions, money orders, safe deposit box contents, savings and checking accounts, refunds, and overpayments including credit card balances and cell phone bills.
Attorney General Todd Rokita said, “Hoosiers throw around a lot of racing metaphors during the month of May. Well, this could be a new track record for our Unclaimed Property Division.”
Nearly $1 billion remains unclaimed statewide. The Unclaimed Property Division conducts outreach efforts to locate rightful owners or heirs once property is in its custody. Individuals and businesses have up to 25 years to claim their money after it is reported to the division.
People are encouraged to visit IndianaUnclaimed.gov or text CLAIM to 46220 to search for their name or those of loved ones who may have unclaimed assets. The public can also contact the Unclaimed Property Division by phone or email.
