The Indiana Senate has decided not to move forward with mid-decade redistricting maps. The decision follows a period of heightened pressure on state senators, according to Julia Vaughn, Executive Director of Common Cause Indiana.
In a statement released after the Senate’s action, Vaughn said, “Our state senators have been harassed, bullied, and intimidated, and yet they stood tall to support a majority of Hoosier voices that said no mid-decade redistricting. We may not see eye to eye on everything, but those who stand up for the people will always be celebrated for doing so.”
The debate over whether to redraw district lines before the next census drew attention from advocacy groups and citizens across Indiana. Opponents of mid-decade redistricting argued it could undermine fair representation by allowing changes outside the standard ten-year cycle.
The Senate’s choice aligns with calls from organizations like Common Cause Indiana that have advocated for maintaining current district boundaries until after the next census.
