The Indiana Chamber of Commerce is urging the state Senate to approve House Bill 1417, a tort reform measure that passed the House with a 61-34 vote. The bill aims to clarify the use of public nuisance claims and increase the cap on qualified settlement offers. Supporters say these changes will help reduce prolonged litigation and encourage quicker, more equitable resolutions.

Vanessa Green Sinders, President and CEO of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, said, “Smart, effective tort reform is about restoring balance and strengthening confidence in the system. House Bill 1417 brings greater clarity, reduces uncertainty and supports employers who operate responsibly. Indiana needs a legal environment that encourages job creation and economic growth, and this bill is an important step in that direction as part of a broader, multi-year effort to keep our economy strong.”

Sinders also emphasized the need for Indiana to maintain its status as an attractive place for business investment: “Indiana’s reputation as a business-friendly state must be actively maintained. Other states are competing aggressively for investment, talent and innovation, so we must keep up the momentum. Passing House Bill 1417 sends a strong message that Indiana is committed to competitiveness, stability and long-term economic growth.”

The Chamber’s public affairs team has offered to provide further information or interviews regarding policy matters or pending legislation.
