The governor ceremonially signed into law a bill authored by State Representative Tim Yocum on May 1 to require the Indiana Department of Education to prepare a report on how schools can achieve greater efficiency, lower costs, and improve outcomes for students.

The legislation, House Enrolled Act 1242, is part of ongoing efforts by the Indiana legislature to find ways to make the state’s education system more efficient. The goal is for students to have access to academic paths that suit their goals after graduation. Yocum said that with this report from the Department of Education, lawmakers will be able to identify areas where unnecessary spending can be reduced while still improving student results.

“Great education starts with understanding what’s working and where improvements can be made,” Yocum said. “This study will help us make data-driven decisions to help Hoosier students and teachers excel.”

According to the new law, the Department of Education will work with the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance on a study examining disparities in per-student operational funding across Indiana. More information about this and other laws passed during the 2026 legislative session is available at iga.in.gov.
