Governor Mike Braun announced on June 3 that Indiana will extend the suspension of both the 7% Gasoline Usage Tax and the Gasoline Excise Tax through July 7, 2026. The current suspension was previously set to expire on June 7.
Braun said, “Indiana has the cheapest gas in the country because we are using every tool in the toolbox to save Hoosier families money. Affordability is my number one priority.” According to AAA’s ranking of gas prices by state, Indiana currently leads with an average price of $3.585 for a gallon of regular gasoline.
The extension means that Hoosiers will continue saving more than 62 cents per gallon at the pump, as the Gasoline Usage Tax would otherwise be $0.265 per gallon and the Gasoline Excise Tax is currently $0.36 per gallon. Today’s action is permitted under Indiana’s energy emergency statute, which allows a maximum duration of up to 120 days for such measures without requiring a special session of the General Assembly if an energy emergency remains in effect.
Braun first announced a temporary suspension of the Gasoline Usage Tax on April 8, followed by an extension and additional excise tax relief on May 6. Both suspensions have now been extended again as part of ongoing efforts during what remains classified as an energy emergency in Indiana law.
Braun has served in various public roles including school boards and state representation, achieved business growth at a national level employing thousands, championed over forty bills during his Senate term, won election to both U.S. Senate and subsequently became governor, graduated summa cum laude from Wabash College with a degree in economics and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, and has been married for forty-nine years while raising four children, according to the official website.
