The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 15 that deputies are investigating an attempted residential burglary and have apprehended a second suspect following a K9 search.

The case involves two male suspects who allegedly tried to break into a shed and later attempted to force entry into a residence in the 2600 block of Ashwood Avenue. The incident was reported at approximately 1:56 AM on May 13, when the homeowner observed the suspects on security cameras.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived within minutes and encountered both suspects fleeing on foot through a nearby field. One suspect, identified as Tristan Schulz, was apprehended shortly after the incident. Deputies found several items of evidence near a black Ford F-150 believed to be connected to the crime, including burglary tools and a flashlight.

Through their investigation, deputies identified Taylor Cox, age 35 of Poseyville, Indiana, as the second suspect. On May 15 at about 3:00 p.m., a K9 deputy saw Cox exiting a vehicle near Pleasant Ridge Drive and Bergdolt Road before entering another structure. Bystanders inside confirmed Cox’s identity and said he fled out the rear of the building. A perimeter was established in the area and a K9 track led officers to Cox’s location where he was apprehended by the K9 Unit. Authorities also determined that Cox left two children inside his vehicle prior to fleeing and shoved a deputy during his arrest.

Cox was transported for medical evaluation before being booked into Vanderburgh County Jail upon clearance. He faces preliminary charges including attempted burglary, resisting law enforcement, battery on law enforcement, and two counts of neglect of a dependent.

The Sheriff’s Office said that “the fact that a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.” The investigation remains ongoing with possible additional charges.
