The Indianapolis Colts announced on Apr. 25 that they have selected Florida defensive end George Gumbs Jr. with the No. 156 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2026 National Football League Draft.
Gumbs, who stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs 245 pounds, brings versatility to the Colts’ defensive line after a college career split between Northern Illinois and Florida. Over his four years in college football, he recorded a total of 11 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, and made 98 tackles across 45 games with 19 starts.
Initially starting as an offensive player at Northern Illinois—first as a wide receiver before moving to tight end—Gumbs transitioned to edge rusher in his third year. In his final season with the Huskies in 2023, he played defense exclusively and registered three-and-a-half sacks along with six-and-a-half tackles for loss over twelve games before transferring to Florida through the transfer portal.
During his two seasons with the Florida Gators (2024-2025), Gumbs accumulated sixty-six tackles, seven-and-a-half sacks, and fourteen-and-a-half tackles for loss across twenty-two games.
A native of Chicago’s South Side and graduate of Simeon Career Academy, Gumbs is twenty-three years old.
