State Rep. Michael Aylesworth and the Indiana Department of Transportation held a ceremony on April 27 to rename a portion of U.S. 41 in honor of fallen Newton County Sheriff Corporal Brandon Schreiber.
The renaming designates the U.S. 41 bridge over the Kankakee River as the “Corporal Brandon Schreiber Memorial Bridge.” Aylesworth authored a resolution during this year’s legislative session to memorialize Schreiber’s sacrifice and his appreciation for nature.
Schreiber, who was from Crown Point, joined the Newton County Sheriff’s Department full time in 2019 after three years as a deputy. On September 1, 2024, he was wounded while pursuing an armed suspect fleeing over the Illinois border and died ten days later at Carle Trauma Center in Urbana, Illinois.
“With the renaming of the Kankakee River bridge, the sacrifices of Cpl. Schrieber will be memorialized in a way that reflects his passions,” Aylesworth said. “My heart goes out to his young family, and I hope the bridge remains a source of peace and remembrance of the life and service of Cpl. Schrieber.”
Before joining Newton County law enforcement in 2019, Schreiber served as deputy marshal with Morocco Town Marshal’s Office and volunteered with Kentland-Jefferson Township Fire Department.
Aylesworth represents House District 11, which includes parts of Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter counties.
