Attorney General Todd Rokita welcomed basketball fans to Indianapolis for the Final Four on April 1, urging them to remain alert for signs of human trafficking as large sporting events can create opportunities for this crime.
Rokita said that while the tournament brings excitement and national attention, it also increases risks associated with human trafficking. “The Final Four is a thrilling event that brings tremendous energy and national attention to Indianapolis,” said Attorney General Todd Rokita. “But large crowds like this also create opportunities for human traffickers. We’re asking fans to stay vigilant and help us watch for signs of trafficking — your eyes and ears can help rescue victims and hold these predators accountable.”
According to Rokita, people in certain job roles such as medical professionals, restaurant workers, hotel staff, and truck drivers are especially likely to encounter victims of trafficking. Human trafficking is described as a multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise involving force, fraud or coercion to obtain labor, services or commercial sex acts. If someone under 18 is involved in commercial sex acts, it constitutes human trafficking regardless of other factors.
Rokita outlined several indicators that may suggest someone is being trafficked: living with their employer or in employer-provided housing; living in poor conditions; being prohibited from speaking freely; giving scripted answers; having identification held by another person; showing physical abuse; appearing fearful or overly compliant; working excessively long hours without proper pay; or being underage and involved in commercial sex.
Anyone who suspects human trafficking should contact local law enforcement immediately or call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “HELP” to 233733. Rokita also noted that criminal cartels operating out of Mexico contribute significantly to human trafficking in America. His office operates initiatives such as the Address Confidentiality Program, which helps protect victims by concealing their residential addresses from public view.
Rokita’s message encourages all visitors and residents during major events like the Final Four to be aware of their surroundings so they can play a role in identifying potential cases of exploitation.
