Indiana voting rights advocates are calling on state Senate leaders to withdraw a bill that would reduce the state’s early voting period from 28 days to 16 days. The request follows a last-minute amendment to House Bill 1359 by the Senate Elections Committee, which was made without prior notice or public input.
The ALL IN for Democracy coalition sent a letter this morning to President Pro Tem Rodric Bray urging him to halt the bill’s progress. The letter, signed by more than ten organizations, stated: “Early voting is extremely popular across our state and in many counties. Please use your position as the leader of the Indiana Senate to stop the advancement of a bill that could create real hardships for Indiana voters and election administrators.”
Organizations signing the letter include Common Cause Indiana, AAUW Indiana, ACLU Indiana, Citizens Action Coalition, Concerned Clergy Indianapolis, Count Us IN, Hoosier Asian American Power, Indiana Alliance of Retired Americans, Indiana Friends Committee on Legislation, Indiana Voices, League of Women Voters of Indiana, and MADVoters.
Common Cause Indiana plays an active role in community engagement by mobilizing supporters for activities such as rallies and election protection efforts (https://www.commoncause.org/indiana/). The organization is part of a national network with chapters in over 25 states (https://www.commoncause.org/indiana/) and has members throughout every congressional district in Indiana (https://www.commoncause.org/indiana/). Its work includes advocating for open government and equal representation while influencing state legislation on issues like campaign finance and redistricting through lobbying efforts (https://www.commoncause.org/indiana/).
